    Drayage Services

Drayage is a land transportation service specialized in the movement of containers between ports, railway terminals, warehouses, distribution centers or final destinations. It is a key link in the international logistics chain, especially in imports and exports.

When do you use the Drayage service?

    • When ocean or rail cargo must be transported to/from a port or intermodal terminal.
    • To connect international transport with last-mile land transport.

Types of Drayage we offer at UTB Logistics:

    • Import and Export

The maximum weight a container can carry depends on the container type and local road transport regulations. In general:

    • 20-foot container (20′ DV): Can carry up to 24,000 kg (52,910 lbs) of cargo.
    • 40-foot container (40′ DV / HC): Can carry up to 27,600 kg (60,847 lbs) of cargo.

It’s important to consider the maximum gross weight allowed, which includes the weight of the empty container plus the cargo, as well as the legal axle weight limits in each state or country when transporting cargo by land.

At UTB Logistics, we help you plan the transportation of your goods in compliance with all safety and weight regulations to avoid delays or penalties.

UTB Logistics does not directly manage customs clearance procedures, but we have a network of trusted partners specializing in customs services. Thanks to these strategic alliances, we can help you coordinate customs clearance for your international shipments, ensuring efficient and seamless management at the border.

Our comprehensive approach combines ground transportation (FTL, LTL, and drayage) with the necessary support to ensure your cargo complies with all customs requirements in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Drayage accessorials are additional charges that may apply during the land movement of containers, depending on factors such as weight, waiting time, or specific logistics services. These costs reflect special service conditions and help prevent expenses not included in the base rate.

Some of the most common accessorials in drayage include:

    • Chassis Fee: normally includes a minimum of 2 days.
    • Tri-axle Fee: Applies if a 20-foot container exceeds 37,500 lbs (minimum 2 days).

    Overweight Fee:

    • 20′ Container: Maximum weight allowed 43,000 lbs.
    • 40′ Container: Maximum weight allowed 45,000 lbs.
    • Prepull Fee: Fee for picking up the container before the delivery date (if applicable).
    • Storage Fee: Fee for additional storage (if applicable).
    • Detention: Up to 2 hours of waiting time is included at no additional cost (if applicable).
    • Chassis Split: When the chassis must be picked up at a different location than the container (if applicable).
    • Chassis Flip: Loading or unloading the container from the chassis (if applicable).
    • Scale/Weight Tickets: Fee for issuing weight tickets (if required).

    ¿Why are they important?

Understanding and anticipating these charges is key to avoiding surprises on your invoice and ensuring efficient and profitable logistics management. At UTB Logistics, we help you identify potential additional charges from the moment you receive your quote so you can make informed decisions from the start.
